Now living in the Highlands of Scotland, I am happiest when surrounded by nature, usually running through it! Running has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, I use it as a form of escapism. To be part of the natural environment, to see how far I can push my physical limits and be as strong and healthy as I can be, is something I strive for in life.
My main passion is mountain trail running, of which achievements include top finishes in the Ultra Trail Picos de Europa in Northern Spain, the Eiger Ultra 50k Trail in Switzerland and a gruelling 60k Ultra in the Pitzal Valley of Austria. Recent adventures include Glacier trekking in the Swiss and Italian Alps and scaling the beautiful peak of Grand Paradiso in Italy. Always looking for a new challenge, my main goal in 2023 was taking on the Monte Rosa Sky Marathon in Italy, with 3490m of ascent in 35km to a height of 4554m, this was no mean feat! When I'm not running I just like being outdoors, I enjoy hiking and ski touring in winter and off road cycling, 'wild' swimming and Sea Kayaking in the warmer months, it's hard to beat Scotlands' west coast on a calm day.
I love the spirit of competition, being an Event Co-Directer at High Terrain events with my partner Ian for 14 years has given me a huge insight into how people perform at their best and at their worst, it inspires me to push my own limits.
Always striving to learn new skills and to help others, I became an active full team member of the local Mountain Rescue Team in the Lake District, where I learnt the benefits of working as a team. Ultimately this made me aware of the importance of having the skills and equipment to look after yourself and others in remote mountain environments.
My interest in Nutrition has been lifelong, always with an interest in food growing up I learnt many skills from my Australian mother who is a very accomplished cook. I then went on to part run a wholefood vegetarian cafe for 5 years, making all the food from fresh and organic ingredients, experimenting with different ingredients and catering for customers with food intolerances and diet restrictions helped to develop my knowledge.
Being a vegetarian for over 20 years, more recently I have included more plant based foods for environmental, ethical and health reasons. Having suffered with health problems, I have first hand experience of how it feels when the body doesn’t function properly, this has helped to shape what I eat and how I see food. I became trained in nutrition for endurance training specifically, to understand the extra demands that endurance exercise puts on the body and how it copes and adapts when fuelled properly. I think we perform better when our bodies are well nourished, not to mention feeling better too!
